Our Explorer Unit
The Explorer unit has recently completed it’s first year during which they have undertaken a variety of activities.
Camping is at the heart of Explorer activities and the seeds are planted with young people to enjoy the outdoors both in scouting and in their everyday lives. Our weekly meetings give them the opportunity to gain and build on essential skills required to become more independent and proficient when they go camping. They’ve have had a lot of fire lighting and cooking practice, and there has been a lot of discussion and practice in planning food/supplies for camp. They have also touched on some pioneering and of course, lots of tent pitching in order to gain the skills to be self-sufficient while away from home.
They have attended a number of camps over the course of the year including several visits to Barrwood – the most recent being in May where they attended a water activity based camp at the invitation of the Falkirk Explorers. There was a Paisley camp in which Explorers completed the Gleniffer Challenge (a night hike). There has been a sub-zero camp at Auchingillan Scout Centre in February where they undertook a wide variety of activities including climbing, axe throwing, zorbing and paint-balling to name a few. There was also an outdoor heated pool in which the Explorers enjoyed a disco. The Explorers also helped to run activities at the Beavers 30th Anniversary District Camp at the Jock Neish Centre. Many of the Explorers also attended the Carnoustie Scout Group camp at Kirkcaldy in March this year.
However, Explorers are not just all about camping. They have also attended and taken part in many other activities over the course of the year including a visit to Edinburgh to see Mary Poppins; the summer trip to The Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel; the group barbeque at Crombie Country Park; the pantomime at Carnoustie High School; a swimming pool party and badge event at Arbroath Swimming Pool and the Dundee Scout Gang Show at the Whitehall theatre.
As always, Carnoustie Scout Group had a strong attendance at the Carnoustie Remembrance Day Parade with our Explorers attending in one guise or another, and many of our young people playing instruments with the band. They also attended the Founders Day Event which was held at Carnoustie High School this year.
The Explorers are now looking forward with much anticipation to the Gibraltar trip this Summer and have shown a great deal of determination and enthusiasm in our fundraising efforts which have been greatly supported by parents and our local community for which they are very gratetful.
