Lockdown Tent Challenge

Date: 26th Aug 2020 Author: Scout Group Admin

During Lockdown, I spent 42 nights camping in my back garden as part of a Tent Challenge with some of my friends. The challenge was started by one friend and at one point, there were around 10 of us all camping in our gardens.

My tent is quite big, so I was able to set up a table with my laptop on it and I did all my schoolwork there. I also moved some of my Mum and Dad’s garden furniture in so I would have somewhere comfortable to sit when playing my Xbox.

It was a good time to be camping out, as the weather was mostly fair, but some nights were very windy and rainy.

Before this challenge, my nights away total was 56. My first night away was at Ladenford and since then, I have been at some amazing camps including trips to Shetland and Orkney, and a night at Deep Sea World where we slept under the shark tank.

My favourite camp was Sub Zero 2020. I was lucky enough to be sleeping in a cabin at that camp as it was right in the middle of Storm Ciara. On the second night of the camp, the storm was really fierce, and everyone had to come inside, so we ended up with quite a lot of people in the cabin.

Carnoustie Scouts were supposed to have a trip to Skye in April, but it had to be cancelled. Instead, the Leaders organised virtual camps with lots of great activities, such as building something that floats using things in your house, creating an agility course and making a zip line for a cuddly toy. Luckily, our Skye trip has been re‐arranged for April 2021.

We also had our tradiotional Gala Day camp in July. Another virtual camp, we had 9 challenges to complete, such as taking part in a virtual campfire, pavement art and estimating the distance between your house and the Scout Hall. We also got to vote to”Soak the Leaders”.

The two nights at the Gala Day camp brought my nights away total to 100, which I am very proud of.
